SPOKANE, Wash. – Fire crews are urging residents to prepare their properties due to unusually dry conditions this winter. The City of Spokane has been actively working along the South Hill Bluff to mitigate potential fire risks.
Since October 2025, the city has cleared approximately 212 acres to reduce fire hazards. This effort is part of a larger initiative to maintain a balanced and healthy wildland forest for future generations.
The Spokane Parks and Recreation Department (SPRD), in collaboration with Friends of the Bluff, hosted an event on Tuesday to further these efforts. The department has been utilizing hand crews and machinery to remove fuels such as dead trees and dry brush.
“Our goal is to have a well balanced wild land forest for generations to come with a healthy, with a healthy balance of wildfire and forest health and, as it gets hotter and drier and the the, the dynamic,” an SPRD representative said.
The initiative is part of Spokane’s proactive approach to fire prevention in light of the changing climate and increased risk of wildfires.
