Spokane County to interview prosecutor nominees publicly

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. – Spokane County residents will soon have the chance to hear from the candidates vying to become the next county prosecutor. The public interviews are set for Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in the lower level of the Spokane County Public Works Building at 1026 W. Broadway Ave.

The Spokane County Commission is nearing its deadline to replace former Prosecutor Larry Haskell, who resigned in July during his third term. The commission is required by state law to select from nominees put forward by Haskell’s party, the Republicans.

The Spokane County GOP advanced three names: Acting Prosecutor Preston McCollam, Assistant Washington Attorney General Steve Garvin and attorney Marshall Casey. McCollam, who currently oversees the prosecutor’s office, received nearly 80% of precinct committee officer votes in the nomination process. Garvin worked for the county prosecutor’s office for 15 years before joining the attorney general’s office in 2022. Casey, an attorney with Sweetser Law Office, previously ran for the Court of Appeals. McCollam has been serving as the acting prosecutor during this transition.

Both McCollam and Garvin have said they plan to run for the office in the 2026 election and have already begun fundraising and securing endorsements.

Casey, currently with Sweetser Law Office, noted that he joined the nominee list primarily to complete the party’s slate.

The decision on who will serve the remainder of Haskell’s term could be made immediately after the public interviews and a brief private discussion among the commissioners.
