SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. – Spokane County Prosecuting Attorney Larry Haskell is stepping down effective July 18, 2025, the county announced in a release.

Haskell, who first took office in January 2015 and was re-elected for a third term in November 2022, shared his decision through a letter to the Board of County Commissioners.

The announcement comes three months after Haskell was appointed special prosecutor to a deadly crash case in Benton County involving State Patrol Trooper Sarah Clasen, a case where criminal charges have yet to be filed.

The County Commissioners expressed their gratitude in the release for Haskell’s decade of service in his current role, as well as his previous positions, including his time as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force.

The Board of County Commissioners plans to appoint Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Preston McCollam, the release added.

Per the Washington State Constitution, the Board of County Commissioners will appoint a replacement from a list provided by the Spokane County Republican Party.

The Board has 60 days from the vacancy date to make the appointment. If not, the Governor will have 30 days to appoint from the list.

The appointed individual will complete Haskell’s term, ending December 31, 2026.

An election will be held in November 2026 to fill the position for the term starting January 1, 2027. Interested candidates can file in May 2026.
