SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. – Spokane County Fire District 9 is on high alert during the busy summer wildfire season. Assistant Chief Nathan Jefferies provided insight into how the crews operate under pressure.

Jefferies explained that when a call comes in, the team quickly gears up, keeping an open mind as they may face unexpected challenges.

“We have to adapt and overcome no matter what,” he said.

Each firefighter ensuring they have their protective gear while starting the engine as soon as they can, becomes a focal point when the emergency bell rings.

“We usually try to keep that the cab of the engine quiet,” Jefferies stated, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a focused mindset for the crew.

Communication between the driver and officer is crucial as they navigate traffic.

Jefferies highlighted the importance of staying calm under pressure, saying, “Whether it’s a fire or a medical emergency, they’re very stressful situations.”

Firefighters undergo a 15-week academy where they learn essential skills, including breaking down doors and pulling hose lines. Jefferies said that readiness is ingrained in all crews, with a focus on immediate response.

“Our community always comes first,” Jefferies emphasized, noting the sacrifice the crews make to serve others.

“We are servants to our citizens.”

Jefferies stressed the importance of teamwork, saying, “One firefighter can’t do much, but if you put three firefighters together with a fire engine and equipment and good training, they can do a lot.”

He also acknowledged the role of family support, sharing that his own family lives in District 9.

“That’s a great motivation,” he said.

Fire District 9 is one of many stations across Spokane and the nation, committed to protecting the community.

Jefferies concluded, “Whether it’s law, ambulance, fire, EMS, nurses or E.R.; we all have a duty to the public, to respond first.”
