SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane County Comissioners voted to join a lawsuit in relation to the settlement over the death of Cindy Lou Hill in jail.
On August 25, 2018, Hill was found unresponsive at Spokane County Jail and later died at Sacred Heart Medical Center due to a bacterial infection. Hill’s estate sued Spokane County Jail and NaphCare, the jail’s medical provider.
In 2022, a court awarded her estate nearly $27 million. NaphCare paid $24 million in punitive damages, while an additional $2.75 million was awarded in other damages.
Spokane County is responsible for paying 10 percent of this amount, roughly $275,000.
The Spokane County Commissioners voted unanimously to join a lawsuit against NaphCare.
While the official resolution has not yet been published, meeting documents indicate the vote was related to the county’s claims over “awards of fees and costs.”
Joining the lawsuit could lead to recouping some costs from the original lawsuit.
