SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane County gave $100,000 from its Housing and Community Development Fund to Second Harvest, a regional food bank, to support families facing food insecurity.

The County announced the $100,000 commitment on November 17 and said the funding was meant to ensure that individuals and families would have access to nutritious meals during the holiday season.

“No one in our community should have to worry about where their next meal is coming from—especially during the holidays. This funding reflects our commitment to helping more families in need enjoy a nutritious meal this Thanksgiving,” Mary Kuney, chair of the Board of County Commissioners, said.

Second Harvest, a regional food bank based in Spokane, is a partner of Feeding America and operates with community partners and programs to stock food banks and meal sites, operate mobile markets, supply the Bite2Go weekend food program for students and more.

Second Harvest operates a Food Near Me locator that directs the user to the nearest food-related resource.

“This kind of support goes straight to work. It means more food in our warehouse, more variety for local pantries, and more families able to put meals on the table. We are grateful to the county for investing in local solutions that get food to people facing hunger quickly and efficiently,” Jason Clark, CEO of Second Harvest, said.

In the announcement about the funding, Spokane County challenged other local governments to match the $100,000 contribution and encouraged residents to consider donating or volunteering with local food banks and community organizations.
