Spokane Councilman Jonathan Bingle to discuss proposed homelessness law

SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane City Councilman Jonathan Bingle will be leading a press conference Friday to discuss concerns regarding the proposed 7-Day Camping Pass.

The conference will focus on the plan proposed by Mayor Lisa Brown as an alternative to the overturned Proposition 1. This alternative plan would have officers giving anyone illegally camping on public property up to seven days’ notice before any enforcement action was taken.

Those seven days would allow a buffer period during which Spokane’s homeless outreach team, or other service providers, could reach out to the individual who received the notice and offer services meant to aid them. If the individual accepts the services, no enforcement or punitive actions would be taken against them.

The announcement of Councilman Bingle’s conference stated that he planned to address the potential impact of Mayor Brown’s 7-Day Camping Pass on Spokane.

The conference is scheduled to take place Friday, June 13, at 1 p.m. It will be held in Coeur d’Alene Park in Browne’s Addition. Parking will be free.
