
SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane City Council Member Michael Cathcart has been chosen as the incoming Chair of the Spokane Regional Health District (SRHD) Board of Health. His one-year term will start on January 1, 2026.
Cathcart expressed his excitement about his new role.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as Chairman of the Spokane Regional Health District Board of Directors in 2026, and I truly look forward to working alongside my fellow board members and staff to keep SRHD moving forward,” Cathcart said.
He emphasized the need for fiscal discipline and thoughtful decision-making in the face of uncertain financial times.
“With uncertain financial times ahead, we will need to be even more disciplined and thoughtful with our fiscal stewardship while prioritizing and delivering essential public health services for our community,” Cathcart said.
He also highlighted the urgent need to address the fentanyl crisis through both treatment and prevention efforts, calling it an “escalating threat that requires a strengthened response.”
Cathcart acknowledged the achievements of outgoing Chair Commissioner Amber Waldref.
“I want to sincerely thank Commissioner Waldref for her service and leadership as board chair during this pivotal time,” he said.
Spokane County Commissioner Chris Jordan has been named the incoming Vice Chair, promising to bring new perspectives to the board leadership.
