SPOKANE — Both southbound lanes of the Greene Street Bridge are closed through June 26 while crews repair and replace parts of the bridge.
One northbound lane is also closed, creating significant backups in both directions. The closure has particularly affected students at nearby Spokane Community College.
Jenna Wittenberg, a student at the college, was late to class because of the detours.
“I was supposed to be early for class. It took me 25 minutes out of my way and I was late,” Wittenberg said. “I’d say about a third of my class came in even later than I did.”
Students say they received no warning about the closure from the city or the college.
“The university could have sent out something too. Normally they do, but we didn’t get anything,” Wittenberg said. “So between the city and the school, nobody was communicating with us.”
The lack of notice has frustrated students who already face long commutes.
“It’s very frustrating. I’m already having to get down here so early and Division can take forever,” Wittenberg said. “So I’m going to have to come even more insanely early.”
Some drivers say they have found alternative routes without major problems. However, drivers can expect significant backups to continue over the next few weeks.
After the current work finishes, the city will begin construction on the northbound side of the bridge starting next month.
