SPOKANE, Wash. – As the federal budget impasse continues, 1.4 million federal workers are currently without paychecks. Additionally, 1 in 8 food insecure Americans are facing a cut-off from food stamps.
Starting Saturday, the federal government will not fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Various local organizations and businesses in Spokane are stepping up to address food insecurity.

DoorDash has announced that it is waiving delivery and service fees for SNAP-eligible food. Additionally, the company is waiving merchant fees for partnered food banks and food pantries, providing crucial support to these organizations.
The “Little Free Pantry” initiative offers occasional food stocked in outside pantries, and the community can contribute by donating items.
2nd Harvest is actively accepting food donations, which are then distributed to multiple food banks throughout the Inland Northwest.
Residents of Spokane can also donate to the city’s community housing and human services through their city bills online or by calling 311.
The Spokane City Council is hosting a food drive until December 15, accepting non-perishable food items and monetary donations. Donations can be dropped off at designated locations in City Hall, with proceeds benefiting Bite2Go and 2nd Harvest.
Skewers Armenian Restaurant is offering free pre-packaged meals of chicken and rice daily starting Saturday. The restaurant encouraged people to visit, stating, “Just come in and ask for a community meal… No questions asked.”
Calvary Baptist Soup Kitchen, located at 203 E. 3rd Ave., serves meals on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Mending Fences Fellowship offers meal services at 1906 E. Sprague Ave. on Mondays from 10:00 a.m. to noon, Tuesdays from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to noon.
St. Ann’s Sunday Lunch at 2120 E. First Ave. is open Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Shalom Ministries, at 518 W. Third Ave., provides meals on Mondays from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
The Salvation Army Spokane, located at 204 E. Indiana Ave., offers services Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Women’s & Children’s Free Restaurant at 1408 N. Washington Ave. provides meals on Wednesdays from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., from September to May, and has walk-up distribution on Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Food Bank, at 500 S. Stone St., operates on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Latinos en Spokane, located at 1502 N. Monroe St., provides services on the last Saturday of the month from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Mid-City Concerns, at 1222 W. Second Ave., caters to those aged 60 and up on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Our Place Food Bank at 1509 W. College Ave. operates on Wednesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Find Solutions Organization, located at 1201 W. Spofford Ave., offers services biweekly on Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The American Indian Center, at 1025 W. Indiana Ave., is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Better Living Center, at 25 E. North Foothills Dr., provides services on Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Off Broadway Family Outreach, located at 2225 W. Mallon Ave., is open Mondays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Northeast Food Pantry, at 4520 N. Crestline St., is open on Tuesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. New Hope Ranch, located at 2524 E.
