The Spokane City Council voted 6-0 to establish the Spokane United 911 Network.
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane City Council is considering an ordinance that proposes the establishment of a new 911 call center for the city. The final reading and vote will take place at the council meeting on Monday, September 15.
Named the ‘Spokane United 911 Network,’ this center would be a stand-alone department, becoming the city’s main public safety answering point for all 911 calls within the Spokane city limits.
The ordinance includes the creation of a new fund to manage the revenues and expenses associated with the call center.
This initiative follows the termination of Spokane’s contract with Spokane Regional Emergency Communications (SREC) in January of this year.
A significant point of contention in the negotiations was the level of representation Spokane had on the SREC board.
The city sought more representation to influence emergency service decisions, but SREC viewed this as a bid for increased local control over its services.
SREC is scheduled to cease its services in Spokane by January 1, 2026.
