SPOKANE — Spokane Arts is asking residents to help shape the design of dozens of new bus stations that will serve more new bus routes coming to Spokane County in the coming years.
The organization, which successfully transformed bus stops along the Central City Line in 2021, now wants to bring the same community-focused approach to a new transit line stretching from downtown Spokane to Whitworth University. The project will include 43 stops total.
“It gives the neighborhood an opportunity to talk about or express what’s important to them about their own neighborhood, whether it’s a historic thing like Chinese laundries or it’s a natural thing like marmots,” said Karen Mobley, art consultant for Spokane Arts.
The organization is gathering community input through a survey that asks residents about their neighborhood’s history, how they describe their area, and what visual elements stand out to them. The goal is to ensure each station feels welcoming and reflects the community it serves.
Spokane Arts says the benefits extend beyond aesthetics.
“We also know that there’s less graffiti and less vandalism when people take pride in what they’re having in their neighborhood. And that’s a real benefit of doing this kind of community based project, for sure,” Mobley said.
The new designs will follow a similar format to previous projects, featuring art on glass surfaces, trash cans and nearby areas. One example of the organization’s previous work is the Division and Main Street bus stop, which represents the Japanese and Chinese culture in that area before downtown’s renovation for Expo 74.
You can find the link to the survey here, it closes at the end of March. Once the research phase concludes, Spokane Arts will begin recruiting local artists to help create the designs.
