Southwest Airlines ends open seating policy at Spokane airport

SPOKANE, Wash. — Southwest Airlines, the largest carrier at Spokane International Airport, is making a significant change to its seating policy. Starting tomorrow, passengers will have assigned seats, ending the airline’s long-held practice of allowing flyers to choose their own seats as they board.

According to Southwest’s new policy, passengers who do not select their seats ahead of time will receive an assigned seat at flight check-in.

Additionally, the airline is introducing a new boarding system using groups one through eight. The boarding order will be determined by seat location, fare type and Rapid Rewards status. Southwest also offers passengers the option to pay for priority boarding, when available.

This change marks the end of an era for Southwest’s unique seating strategy, impacting how travelers experience flights from Spokane International Airport.
