SPOKANE, Wash. – Residents of a South Hill neighborhood woke up to unsettling news on Tuesday morning. A car window and the back door of a home were shot out overnight, leaving the community concerned for their safety.
The Spokane Police Department reported that no one was injured in the incident. Authorities are still searching for the person responsible for the shooting at the time of writing.
The shooting occurred in the early morning hours around the 3900 block of East 36th Avenue. Police have not identified any suspects.
Jennifer, a resident, was startled by shattered glass after getting into her car. She initially thought it was just a rough start to her day until neighbors informed her that a bullet might have caused the damage.
Krystina, whose house was also hit, shared her experience. “Someone didn’t try to break into our house — someone shot a bullet through our back door. There was glass everywhere,” she said.
Krystina found the bullet herself while sweeping up glass from the floor. “This bullet came through my back door about 12 inches away from where sometimes my youngest son will sneak up in the middle of night,” she said.
Across the street, Kristy Simonds and her daughter Ivy have always felt safe in the neighborhood. Kristy said, “Yeah, I’ve always felt safe here. We got to this house when there were no houses around. It was a field. And so, you know, now that there’s more going on, and the shootings doesn’t make anyone feel safe at all.”
Ivy also shared her feelings. “Well, after the shooting that was on 34th, I was a little bit scared. But then I didn’t know about this, so I’m not really that scared, because it’s happened before. But I’m kind of scared,” she said.
The neighborhood has generally been quiet, a place where kids like Ivy can walk to school. However, the recent shooting has changed their perspective.
Kristy emphasized the community’s resolve to address the issue. “This isn’t something that we’re just going to let happen. This isn’t something that we’re not going to talk about. We are going to name this as a community. We are going to prioritize our safety as a community and we’re just not going to let it get brushed underneath the rug,” she said.
The Spokane Police Department is urging anyone with security cameras or information related to the incident to contact CrimeCheck immediately.
