Soccer fans unite as Sounders bring historic match to Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. — Soccer fans will witness history tonight as the Seattle Sounders face the Vancouver Whitecaps at One Spokane Stadium at 8 p.m., marking the first time the Major League Soccer team has played in Spokane.

The highly anticipated match has generated excitement among local soccer fans, with most tickets selling out almost immediately when they became available. Some new tickets were made available this week.

The Sounders are playing in Spokane because their home stadium, Lumen Field, is undergoing preparations to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer. This temporary relocation has created an opportunity for eastern Washington soccer enthusiasts to witness top-level professional soccer in their backyard.

The NWSL’s Seattle Reign will play three additional games at One Spokane Stadium in the coming weeks on March 25, 28, and April 4. This creates what local fans are calling a month of soccer madness that promises to boost the region’s soccer culture and strengthen connections across professional soccer teams.

“We are really hoping this will be another boost, I think one of the things that makes soccer such a unique game around the world is the community aspect,” said Loren Baker, the Community Outreach Director for the 509 Syndicate.

The 509 Syndicate is a local group that supports soccer teams in the community, including the Velocity and Zephyr. The group was formed a 2023 and has grown to more than 100 members. They are often recognized and heard at Velocity and Zephyr games for their loud drums and their march to games before kickoff.

“What it is really about is coming and yelling and cheering, but it is about making those connections with people. Laughing at a game, yelling at the ref for a while, yelling at the opposition, and then at the end of the 90 minutes slapping five,” Baker said.

The 509 Syndicate plans to march to tonight’s game alongside the Sounders’ fan group, the Emerald City Supporters, creating a unique collaboration between supporter groups. The two groups plan to meet at Flatstick Pub beforehand, and all community members are welcome to join the festivities.
