SNAP funds endangered; Spokane Rep. Baumgartner points finger at Democrats

SPOKANE, Wash – Spokane Representative Michael Baumgartner (WA-05) is criticizing Democrats, saying they are responsible for the government remaining shut down and SNAP funds expiring.

Congressman Baumgartner’s team responded to inquiries with a statement, saying, “Republicans have consistently voted to keep SNAP funded and the government open, while Democrats have repeatedly said no, voting 13 times to keep the government shut down and block help for struggling families.”

Baumgartner expressed frustration, saying, “It’s time to stop the stunts, stop the dishonesty and reopen the government now.”

Despite the blame game, both parties have proposed legislation.

New Mexico Senator Ben Ray Lujan spearheaded a bill seeking passage through unanimous consent, but it was blocked by Senator Thune from South Dakota.

Meanwhile, Republican Senator Josh Hawley introduced similar legislation backed by Republicans.

Senator Schumer stated in a press conference on Wednesday that Democrats are willing to support Hawley’s bill if it reaches the floor.

The government shutdown is the second longest in U.S. history, with SNAP and WIC benefits set to lapse this weekend.
