WALLACE, Idaho – The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office clarified that the Shoshone County Jail is not closing, despite recent rumors. The facility continues to operate and is making adjustments to manage its population, according to a press release from the office.

The Sheriff’s Office has requested the Shoshone County Prosecutor’s Office to temporarily reduce the jail population by releasing non-violent inmates with less severe charges. Sheriff William Eddy emphasized that violent offenders and those posing public safety risks will remain in custody.

Eddy confirmed that no inmates will be transferred to other facilities as part of this process, which aims to manage the population without additional costs to the county.

The cost of housing state-held inmates currently exceeds the reimbursement provided to Shoshone County. The Sheriff’s Office is working to expedite transfers of these inmates to other facilities while addressing staffing and training needs.

These measures are intended to ensure the jail operates safely and in compliance with Idaho Jail Standards. Increased training is being administered to staff to maintain a safe environment and provide appropriate care to inmates.

Eddy reiterated that the jail is not closing and that the office will continue to evaluate conditions and provide updates as needed.

The safety of jail staff, inmates and the community remains the highest priority for the Sheriff’s Office.
