SPOKANE, Wash. – Shaw Middle School went on lockdown for a brief period Wednesday morning while Spokane police investigated an alleged weapon on campus, according to Spokane Public Schools.
A message sent from Shaw Middle School Principal Keoni Dang at around 9:05 a.m. alerted families that the school was on lockdown “out of an abundance of caution” while police investigated.
At around 9:25 a.m., a follow-up message was sent informing families that an involved student had been sequestered, and the lockdown was downgraded to a “secure and teach.” According to the SPS website, all normal building activities continue during a secure and teach while exterior doors remain locked.
“For student privacy reasons, I cannot share more details but will let you know as soon as the Secure and Teach has been lifted,” Dang said in the message. “We want to remind all students and families that weapons of any kind, including BB guns, toy guns, or other replicas, are strictly prohibited on school grounds.”
The secure and teach was fully lifted at around 9:45 a.m.
