SEATTLE — The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) announced their upcoming collaboration with the Seattle Seahawks and Lumen Field to measure ground motion during the 2026 NFL Playoff Games.
On Monday, PNSN installed six stations with seismic sensors throughout Lumen Field. These sensors will record the ground-shaking caused by fans as they jump, cheer and celebrate. The stations are strategically placed near the 50-yard line, at the 300 level corners and the top of the Hawks Nest.
“With these six seismometers, we have Lumen Field wired up,” said PNSN Director Harold Tobin of the University of Washington. “We can record exactly how the excitement of the crowd leads to shaking of the ground, much like an earthquake does. We expect the massive crowd of 12s to generate measurable seismic energy.”
During the game, PNSN will stream real-time seismograms on their website, showing live records of fan-generated shaking.
PNSN previously brought seismometers to the stadium during Seahawks playoff games in 2014, 2015 and 2017, as well as during the Beast Quake run by Marshawn Lynch in 2011.
