WASHINGTON — Senators from Washington and Idaho spoke on the U.S. Senate floor on Monday to address the “horrific loss” of two firefighters who were killed in what police call an ambush on Sunday evening.
The senators received unanimous consent to speak, meaning no member objected.
“While business continues here, life for the north Idaho community of Coeur d’Alene remains at a very painful standstill while we mourn the horrific loss of two firefighters,” Republican Senator Mike Crapo of Idaho said.
The two firefighters and a third who was hospitalized hadn’t been identified by Monday morning.
“I ask my colleagues to join me in sending your prayers for that firefighter’s full recovery, for the deceased victims, for their families and for the entire North Idaho community grieving this heinous act,” Crapo said.
“This evil attack on the people who dedicate their lives to protecting and serving our communities is despicable, and it’s not Idaho,” Republican Senator Jim Risch of Idaho said.
The two Democratic senators of Washington shared their support for Idaho as it grieves the deaths and noted the close relationship between the state, particularly for communities along the state line like Coeur d’Alene.
“Many Washington police and responders participated in yesterday’s activities,” Sen. Maria Cantwell said. “Our hearts go out to the people of Idaho and yes, we want a moment of silence to remember these firefighters.”
