Senator Cantwell urges oversight hearing on National Weather Service

WASHINGTON D.C. – Senator Maria Cantwell has taken action to address concerns about the National Weather Service (NWS) by reaching out to Commerce Committee Chair Ted Cruz.

Cantwell sent a letter requesting an oversight hearing to examine the weather readiness challenges faced by the NWS and the agency’s progress in addressing staffing issues.

In July, the Office of Personnel Management granted the NWS permission to hire 450 mission-critical positions. This effort aims to address the 550 staff vacancies that arose this year alone.

However, the Commerce Committee has not yet received information on the status of these hiring efforts.
