Senator Cantwell questions Trump appointees for NOAA

WASHINGTON DC- Today U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), who is the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

She questioned Dr. Neil Jacobs, President Donald Trump’s nominee to head the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Taylor Jordan, is the nominee to serve as NOAA’s Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Environmental Observation and Prediction.

NOAA is responsible for studying and monitoring the ocean and atmosphere, weather forecasting including the National Weather Service, coastal habitat restoration, and conservation of marine protected species such as salmon and orcas, and managing our nation’s fisheries.

Immediately out of the gate the senator issued condolences to the chair, the Senator from Texas, Senator Ted Cruz on the heels of the natural disaster in Texas that claimed the lives of so many just this weekend.

She underscored in the week of this natural disaster the importance of NOAA and expressed concerns over cuts.
