SEATTLE — Gov. Bob Ferguson met with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver earlier Thursday, raising hopes among Washington sports fans for the return of the Seattle SuperSonics.
“As a kid, the governor grew up attending many Sonics games, and attending the Lenny Wilkens basketball camp. The governor recently reached out to Commissioner Adam Silver requesting an introductory meeting. They had a good conversation, and the governor offered to be helpful.” A spokesperson from the governor’s office said.
Specific details of the meeting were not disclosed. The discussion comes as Climate Pledge Arena — the former home of the Sonics — has undergone a $1.15 billion renovation. The arena still includes an unfinished storage area labeled “NBA Locker Room.”
Ferguson has previously said that he is willing to help bring the Sonics back to Seattle. He most recently reiterated that commitment during his State of the State address earlier this year.
The SuperSonics left Seattle in 2008 and relocated to Oklahoma City, where the team became the Thunder. The Thunder won the 2025 NBA championship, defeating the Indiana Pacers.
