WASHINGTON STATE – As the holiday shopping season ramps up, residents in Washington and Idaho are being warned about potential online scams. Kelly McPhee from Banner Bank highlights the risks that come with increased online shopping.
“They’re 24/7. Especially this time of year, they’re taking advantage of this time of year when we are placing more purchases and online, in person debit cards, credit cards, we’re busy,” said McPhee.
Banner Bank, with 76 locations in Washington and nine in Idaho, advises using credit cards for added protection.
“Credit cards come with not only extra protections, but you might be surprised what else your credit card inherently comes with. It comes with extended warranties. It comes with additional assistance,” McPhee said.
Sites like White Mountain Supply are appearing with heavily discounted winter gear, but customers report issues when tracking their orders. Jon Maroni from Numerica Credit Union points out the emotional impact on those who fall victim to scams.
“The frustration, disappointment and then sometimes the shame they might feel in realizing that they made a fraudulent purchase or from a fraudulent company can be really, really challenging for folks to deal with,” said Maroni.
Attempts to contact White Ski Mountain Company in Jackson, New Hampshire, confirmed they are not associated with White Mountain Supply. They have received numerous inquiries about the legitimacy of the latter.
On platforms like Reddit, users warn others about their experiences with White Mountain Supply, citing unfulfilled orders and nonexistent customer service.
Experts in the banking industry suggest a simple online search can be a powerful tool to avoid scams.
“You’re going to be able to find out in five seconds whether you want to make that purchase or not,” said McPhee.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and take steps to protect themselves during this busy shopping season.
