Residents, responders brace for Yakima River flooding impact, woman rescued from high waters

The National Weather Service has forecast continued rainfall in Upper Kittitas County, though at a reduced rate compared to previous nights.

Officials have warned that the Yakima River near Ellensburg is expected to rise above flood stage tonight, which could lead to flooding of roads and pastures nearby.

They advise residents not to drive through floodwaters due to potential debris and hidden hazards.

Firefighters from Kittitas County Fire District #7 (KCFD#7) have been out in the Sun Country neighborhood assessing roadways to ensure emergency response readiness.

Residents needing sandbags can visit KCFD7 Station 73, located off the Golf Course Rd exit, where 600 new sandbags have been made available.

Meantime, an 87-year-old woman was evacuated by Swiftwater Rescue deputies from her Elk Meadows home due to surrounding floodwaters.

After ensuring her safety, deputies returned to rescue her caregiver and cat. Fortunately, no other emergency calls related to flooding were reported today.

KITTITAS COUNTY, Wash. – The National Weather Service’s flood warning for Kittitas County remains in effect, despite lighter rain and slightly reduced water levels. The warning is set to last until Friday, December 12 at 4 p.m.

Residents in the Elk Meadows, Pine Glen and Sun Island neighborhoods along the Yakima River are experiencing partial or full road coverage by floodwaters. Drivers are urged to exercise caution and avoid driving through water.

The following roads are closed, according to the Kittitas County Sheriff:

SR10 is still closed between SR970 and Thorp with no announced time for reopening.SR906 remains closed between Hyak Drive and Yellowstone Trail Road after flowing water undermined and destroyed a section of the road. Businesses and residences are still accessibleSalmon La Sac Road remains closed north of White Fir Rd near the Last Resort.Lambert Road, Red Bridge Road, and Teanaway Road are all open and closely monitored.

Some private roads in the Elk Meadows, Pine Glen, and Sun Island neighborhoods along the Yakima River remain partly or wholly covered by floodwaters.

Sand and sandbags are available for residents and business owners at several locations, including Thorp Fire Station #11, KCFR Station #73, KCFR Station #75 and Snoqualmie Pass Fire & Rescue Station #46.

Anyone needing evacuation assistance should call Kittcom at 509-925-8534 or 911 in an emergency.

The Kittitas County Department of Public Health also warned of floodwater contamination to wells. Affected residents should drink bottled or boiled water until wells are tested. For questions about wells or septic systems, contact KCPHD at 509-962-7515.
