PULLMAN, Wash. – A researcher at Washington State University is advocating for a male contraceptive pill, which he believes could significantly impact women’s health.

Dr. Wei Yan, the director of WSU’s School of Molecular Biosciences, is developing a non-hormonal male contraceptive. Unlike traditional methods, Yan’s approach disables sperm instead of eliminating them.

Yan stated that a male contraceptive pill could play a crucial role in reducing unintended pregnancies, which account for nearly half of all pregnancies worldwide. He recently called on scientific journals to increase investment in this research, emphasizing its importance for women’s health.

Yan’s team has shown promising results in animals with a compound that induces temporary infertility without side effects.
