Rep. Baumgartner reacts to government shutdown, blames democrats

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Republican congressman Michael Baumgartner released a statement in response to the government shutdown that went into effect at midnight, when Congress failed to pass a new spending bill to keep the government funded.

“While negotiations continue on spending bills, I supported continuing government funding at Biden-era spending levels to keep the government open through November 21st,” Baumgartner said. “Sadly, Democrats are opting to shut down the government at their own spending levels over unrealistic demands of expanding Obamacare and free healthcare for illegal immigrants.”

His message echoes that of many republican lawmakers alleging that Democrats’ proposal to restore $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts would fund healthcare for undocumented immigrants.

Individuals without legal status in the United States are not eligible to enroll in healthcare coverage under Medicaid or the Affordable Care Act, also known colloquially as Obamacare.
