Regional water facility to conduct study of the Spokane River

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane County Regional Water Reclamation Facility will be conducting a mixing zone study of the Spokane River on Tuesday using an environmentally safe dye. Red-colored dye will be visible in parts of the river from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Rhodamine WT dye will be used to conduct the test, an environmentally-safe dye that is not harmful to humans, animals or other wildlife according to the Spokane County Public Works website.

The study is required by the Washington State Department of Ecology as part of the facility’s NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) permit. Dye will be added to the facility’s wastewater around 11 a.m., allowing water specialists to monitor how it mixes into and interacts with the river environment.

The dye mixture will enter the river east of Spokane Community College, and it will be best viewed at the intersection of North Havana Street and East Upriver Drive.
