Redfin study suggests home buyers are canceling deals at record rates

New data from Seattle-based housing company Redfin suggests that home buyers are canceling purchase agreements at unprecedented rates.

According to Redfin, more than 40,000 signed home purchase agreements were canceled in December 2025. This represents more than 16% of all homes that went under contract during that time.

This cancellation rate is an increase from nearly 15% in December 2024.

The ongoing slump in housing sales has been largely attributed to high housing costs and rising inventory. Experts suggest these factors have led home buyers to become more selective in their decisions.
