LEWISTON, Idaho – The Red Cross is closing its Lewiston donation center after nearly 30 years of service. According to the Red Cross communications director, the center was not collecting blood in a cost-efficient manner.
The organization has decided to continue mobile blood drives in Lewiston. These drives will be staffed by personnel from the Red Cross Northwest region.
The Lewiston facility faced logistical challenges as it had to send collected blood to Salt Lake City for testing. In contrast, the Northwest region sends its blood to Portland, which is a more cost-effective option.
The Lewiston Center will officially close on August 2.
