Rathdrum City Council denies rezoning for 500 new homes

RATHDRUM, Idaho— The Rathdrum City Council recently revisited a rezoning request that could have led to the construction of 500 new homes in the community.

This reconsideration was due to an oversight in notifying nearby residents.

Leon Duce, Rathdrum City Administrator, explained the situation, saying, “The mailers to the houses within 300 feet of that property had not been done.”

As a result, the initial approval was deemed out of order, prompting the council to take a second look.

With the flyers now delivered, the council encouraged more community feedback.

Duce noted, “The information that the public knew was that it was going to be up to 500 homes. And so, they wanted to come and express their opinions.”

Opinions shared with the city largely focused on maintaining a calm pace of growth.

Ali Blake, a new Rathdrum resident, expressed her thoughts on the matter.

“The conversation—it’s nonstop about the amount of people coming and whether or not people are excited about that,” she said.

Blake moved to Rathdrum for the peace and space it offers.

“I like that Rathdrum and the surrounding areas offer some of those things, but I also like that it’s quieter… we have no neighbors. In-between a slower-paced lifestyle and access to fun things for my kids to do—that’s something we hope stays for sure,” Blake added.

Other residents voiced concerns about potential traffic, crime and cultural changes associated with rapid development.

With the rezoning denied, the city awaits the developer’s next move.

Duce commented, “I think we’re waiting to see. The first step for the city is to issue a finding of facts and a notice of decision. Then, it’s up to the applicant.”
