Pullman apartment fire linked to explosive device, standoff ongoing

Pullman Police Commander Ruben Harris has now confirmed the fire was sparked by an explosive device and that police are in a standoff with a suspect, a male resident of the apartment complex.

The standoff is occurring at the intersection of US 195 and US 95, near the top of the Lewiston Grade. Authorities have closed the area and are urging people to avoid it.

Harris said negotiators are on scene, communicating with the suspect. Law enforcement has obtained a warrant for his arrest on charges of first-degree arson.

The fire has caused significant damage to the south portion of the apartment building. About 20 units have been damaged, according to the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross is opening a shelter at 10:30 p.m. at the Pullman Parks and Recreation Center located at 190 SE Crestview St. Building B.

Food, cots and other urgent needs will be provided at the shelter.

Evacuated residents are advised to bring necessary items, including prescription medication, clothing, hygiene supplies and important documents.

Special items for children and infants, such as diapers and toys, should also be brought. This ensures that all family members, including those with specific needs, are accommodated.

PULLMAN, Wash. – Pullman Fire Department and Pullman Police Department responded to an active fire near the corner of NW Larry and N Yates, close to N Grand. Moscow Fire Department is providing assistance.

Road closures are in effect at Larry & Yates, Larry & Friel, and Yates & Ann. Residents are urged to avoid the area to allow first responders to manage the situation effectively.

Authorities are asking the public to be cautious of emergency vehicles and stay clear of the vicinity until the scene is secured.
