SPOKANE, Wash. – A public memorial is taking place in Spokane to honor the people who died while in ICE detention in 2025. Community members have gathered on the northeast end of the Monroe Street Bridge. The event also honored Renee Good and Alex Pretti whom were shot by ICE agents in early 2026.
Organizers of the event say their goal is to remember the lives lost and draw attention to the conditions in detention centers. Spokane Indivisible is leading the demonstration, emphasizing that the event is about remembrance, not violence or disagreement.
Protesters held tomb-shaped signs with the names of those who allegedly died in ICE custody. The demonstration has attracted roughly 30 to 40 people.
King George McCabe, a protestor, expressed the sentiment behind the silent protest.
“Protest in silence for every name that you see on every board. Donald Trump said he wants to make America great again. Donald, we need you, buddy,” McCabe said.
Another protestor, Louise Covanii, highlighted the ideals symbolized by the Statue of Liberty.
“Our statue of liberty says, give me your tired, your poor, your hungry, and that’s what this should be about. I mean we have it in the constitution,” Covanii said.
The event serves as a solemn reminder of the need for attention to human rights within detention centers.
