SPOKANE, Wash. – A protest planned for Saturday in Spokane is part of a multi-national day of protest with events scheduled in every state. Sami Perry, one of the organizers, expressed the motivation behind the protest.
“Power to the people. We’re out here, we’re upset about how things are going in our country. We’re attempting to save our democracy, and the people are speaking out,” said Perry.
The event is designed to blend art, activism and peaceful protest. Perry shared that the day will include a band, speakers and a two-mile march for those who wish to participate.
“We’ve got a band, we’ve got speakers, and then we’re going to let people go spread out on the west side of Division Street only. There’s also a two-mile march for anyone who wants to join it,” said Perry.
Republican Speaker Mike Johnson recently commented on the protests, expressing his concerns.
“We call it the ‘Hate America rally.’ I bet you see pro-Hamas supporters, Antifa types, and Marxists in full display,” said Johnson.
Johnson highlighted a recent incident at his office to illustrate his concerns about protest behavior.
“They berated a Capitol Police officer, screamed at him. He was just merely standing in his post. Shows again their disdain for law enforcement as we see all around the country, the Democrats and everyone, in that that party screaming, assaulting the Ice officers,” said Johnson.
Perry hopes the protest will set a positive example and emphasized the importance of maintaining peace.
“We will not make any difference if it gets ugly. We’re here to send a peaceful message — to show unity, solidarity, and a desire for positive change,” said Perry.
To ensure the event remains orderly, Perry detailed the plans in place.
“We have multiple security systems set up — peacekeepers, the blue-shirt dialogue team with Spokane Police, and over a hundred trained volunteers for de-escalation and safety,” said Perry.
