Proposed updates to Washington’s Clean Fuel Standard could reduce pollution from aviation, trucking

The Washington Department of Ecology is proposing statewide changes to the Clean Fuel Standard.

The updates would increase incentives for investing in charging equipment for zero-emission heavy-duty trucks and would promote the use of non-petroleum fuels to power airplanes. Ecology says these changes can reduce air pollution and support Washington’s climate strategy.

This legislation would be separate from set under House Bill 1409. Passed in March, that law requires annual reductions in commercial carbon intensity, building to 45 percent reduction by 2038.

Public meetings to discuss the new updates will be held in late July. Ecology is accepting public comments on the proposal until 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 1.
