PEND OREILLE COUNTY, Wash. – The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is planning a prescribed burn and fire operation near Deer Park, which they said may begin as soon as October 13.

The plan includes up to 134 acres across two locations.

The first location is around 2.5 miles south of Deer Valley, and the second is around 6.5 miles northeast of Cusick, across the Pend Oreille river from Locke.

“Prescribed fires are a common tool used by land managers and conservation groups to reduce the amount of fuel available for wildfires, improve the health of older trees, support new and current wildlife habitats, and recycle soil nutrients back into the ground,” DNR said in a press release.

“This burn is focused primarily on reducing the risk of high-severity wildfire in the area by consuming slash piles within the burn units and preparing the landscape for tree plantings and natural regeneration,” DNR said.

All burn areas will have signs posted in advance.
