Police discover false report during gun incident investigation near Moses Lake middle schools

UPDATE: October 1 at 5:13 p.m.

The Moses Lake Police Department (MLPD) released an update on Wednesday evening announcing that the student’s report of being threatened with a gun has been determined to be false.

As the investigation continued, officers discovered that the information given to them was dishonest. According to MLPD, officials do not believe a criminal incident occurred.

Charges against the students involved are now being considered by the juvenile prosecutor for false reporting.

UPDATE: October 1 at 11:55 a.m.

The Moses Lake Police Department (MLPD) released more information about the gun threat against local middle school students that occurred yesterday afternoon.

MLPD said they received reports of a man in a car threatening cross country runners with a gun at around 4:00 p.m., and that there was about a 15-minute delay between the incident and it being reported.

A drone was immediately launched in the area along with “a large number of officers from MLPD and Grant County Sheriff’s Office.”

MLPD said that one person they contacted matched the description given by students, but it was determined he was at work during the time of the incident and subsequently released.

MLPD said they have not located a gun or a vehicle matching the description, and they will continue to investigate the incident.

MOSES LAKE, Wash. – Students from Frontier and Endeavor middle schools experienced a frightening encounter this afternoon when an individual with a gun approached them during cross country activities, the Moses Lake School District (MLSD) announced.

MLSD said all students and staff are safe, and no injuries occurred. If a child was involved in this incident, parents will receive communication from the district.

Law enforcement responded quickly to the scene and is actively investigating the situation.
