OLYMPIA, Wash. — Sen. Nikki Torres has introduced a bill to provide a permanent sales and use tax exemption for baby and adult diapers.
Torres (R-Pasco) emphasized the importance of tax relief for families and caregivers managing everyday costs.
“There’s a lot of talk in Olympia about raising taxes, but not nearly enough about tax breaks. This is one that matters,” Torres said in a release by Washington State House Republicans.
The proposed Senate Bill 6327 would exempt diapers from state sales and use taxes starting October 1, 2026. This applies to both disposable and washable diapers for all ages, including adult incontinence products.
Torres highlighted the financial strain diapers impose, especially for seniors on fixed incomes and their caregivers. “Anyone caring for an elderly parent or loved one knows how quickly those costs add up,” she said.
She described the bill as a practical approach to tax relief, focusing on necessities. “This is the kind of work people expect us to focus on,” Torres said. She’s calling for a fair hearing and clear path to passage.
