SPOKANE, Wash. – College students and recent graduates in Spokane are finding it increasingly difficult to secure entry-level jobs. A new study by Oxford Economics has labeled this trend as “the new graduate reality.”
Many students express frustration over the requirements for entry-level positions. “I think a lot of the time people are looking for some experience in an entry-level job which makes it not entry-level,” said Drew Keegan, a student.
Cameron Olivier, a recent graduate from Eastern Washington University, shared his struggles. “There’s not really an entry scene anymore and I don’t think a lot of companies realize that,” he said. Olivier expected a booming tech industry but found the job search challenging. “Oh man, trying to find anything in my field is a pain,” he added.
The Oxford study found that since mid-2023, 85% of the rise in unemployment is among new market entrants unable to find work. It suggests that the adoption of AI has contributed to these challenges.
O. Ray Angle, Gonzaga University’s Assistant Vice President for Career and Professional Development, emphasized the need for tech skills. “Well I think it’s really important to have tech skills because all employers need you to demonstrate those skills when you graduate,” he said. Angle also noted the importance of staying adaptable, adding, “you may need to continue to retool to be employable.”
Angle advised graduates to have a backup plan. “But knowing that the workforce changes constantly I would say also having a Plan B something else that you’re interested in that you start to dabble in,” he stated.
Despite the challenges, Olivier remains hopeful. “When you’re applying for jobs, you hope these companies take that leap of faith and they’re like you know he’s brand new. He’s willing to learn. and he’s willing to do it for cheap,” he said.
