Washington State Patrol (WSP) reports one person was killed and another seriously injured as a result of the crash.
The driver and passenger were southbound when the vehicle crossed into the northbound lane, hitting the bus head-on, WSP said.
The smaller vehicle rolled into the northbound ditch, while the bus came to rest on its side off the roadway.
The 32-year-old driver of the first vehicle was life-flighted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The 63-year-old male passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The 39-year-old bus driver was transported to Lake Chelan Health with unknown injuries.
Eight juveniles were on the bus. None of them were injured.
Both vehicles involved in the crash were totaled and towed from the scene by local towing companies.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
CHELAN COUNTY, Wash. – The Washington State Patrol is investigating a crash involving a school bus transporting wrestlers from Cascade High School in Chelan County.
According to the district, the team’s bus was struck by another car while traveling to a tournament on Highway 97 near Knapps Tunnel. Coach D’Andre Vasquez cared for students until first responders arrived. All students, Coach Vasquez and the bus driver were evaluated at Lake Chelan Health and no serious injuries were reported.
The School District thanked Lake Chelan Health for its care, Superintendent Brad Wilson of the Lake Chelan School District for checking on students and staff and WSP Trooper Mora for helping. Another district driver was sent to Lake Chelan Health, and students were either released to their parents or transported home.
A separate fatal crash near Daroga Park caused additional closures on Highway 97, between mile markers 219 and 218. Detours remain available at Highway 97A, US-2 Pine Canyon or McNeil Canyon Road.
