OLYMPIA, Wash. – Lawmakers in Olympia began the 2026 legislative session today, which is set to last 60 days and conclude on March 12.

House Speaker Laurie Jinkins quickly addressed concerns over federal policies, criticizing actions by the Trump administration. She claimed these policies are financially stressing Americans.

Jinkins highlighted the state’s response to controversial federal policies, particularly after significant Medicaid cuts in the president’s budget bill and ongoing legal battles over SNAP benefits.

She noted that Washington has stepped up to fill the gaps in health insurance coverage and food assistance for its residents.
