Olympia grants health inspection power to detention centers

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The state of Washington gained new authority to conduct health inspections at private detention facilities. Governor Bob Ferguson signed a law on Monday that allows for these inspections.

The legislation aims to establish enforceable health, safety, and human rights standards for detainees, including those at the Northwest ICE Processing Center.

The new law permits the state Department of Health to inspect facilities without prior notice. It sets standards for detainee living conditions, focusing on access to clean water, proper lighting, and sanitation.

This measure is expected to cost Washington’s general fund approximately $1.8 million over the next four years.
