ANACORTES, Wash. – Two oil refinery operators in northwest Washington have been fined over $1.3 million each for improperly handling waste. H-F Sinclair and Tesoro, both operating in the Anacortes area, face penalties for mishandling oily sludge and acid waste.
The Washington Department of Ecology stated that despite notifications for nearly a year, both companies improperly stored large volumes of dangerous waste at their facilities. The department is currently investigating whether there was environmental damage due to the mishandling.
Both H-F Sinclair and Tesoro have 30 days to either pay the fines or appeal the penalties.
