Numerica warns about increase in unpaid fines scam messages

SPOKANE, Wash. — Numerica Credit Union is warning the community about an increase in scam messages lately.

Texts, emails and letters are being sent out claiming to be from the State Department of Licensing. Numerica says these messages often appear as notices for unpaid tolls or traffic violations.

The messages then urge you to scan a QR code or click a link to pay the fines.

Numerica says if you receive an alert like this, do not click the link or scan a QR code. These scams are designed to install malware or steal financial information.

When in doubt, it is always best to verify information with official agencies.
