NORTH IDAHO – Hunters in North Idaho have reason to be optimistic about the upcoming big game season. Reports indicate a promising outlook, particularly for elk and whitetail deer enthusiasts.
Experts have observed thriving deer and elk populations in the Panhandle region, thanks to back-to-back mild winters. An early spring this year further boosted wildlife, as melting snow encouraged plants to green up sooner, providing fresh forage.
Elk calf survival rates have been notably high across the region. Unit 4, located just east of Coeur d’Alene, reported an impressive 90% calf survival rate over the past two winters.
Idaho Fish and Game have a few reminders for hunters. Chronic waste disease testing is mandatory for all deer harvested in parts of Unit 1, the northernmost portion of the state. Hunters should also remain bear-aware, as grizzlies, though rarely seen, can be found in Units 1 through 9.
As the season approaches, hunters are encouraged to prepare and stay informed for a successful experience. Good luck this season!
