LEAVENWORTH, Wash – A 30-year-old North Carolina man was the victim of a drowning on the west side of Colchuck Lake near Leavenworth, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

Investigators said a satellite text-to-911 call on Sunday, August 3, at 7:16 p.m. reported a person underwater for five minutes and that attempts to resuscitate the man were being made.

The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue was immediately notified. Due to the remote location, a hoist-capable helicopter from Washington State Department of Emergency Management was requested.

The US Army Air Ambulance Detachment (Yakima Dustoff) responded, arriving at 8:46 p.m. and deploying a medic via hoist.

Six rescuers from Chelan County Volunteer Search and Rescue and two Sheriff’s Office SAR Deputies were also deployed.

The man was transported to the Leavenworth Fish Hatchery where Cascade Medical Paramedics pronounced him dead.
