Nonprofit Giving Back Spokane under investigation for fund misuse

SPOKANE, Wash. – Questions have surfaced regarding the operations of Giving Back Spokane and its former executive director following allegations of fund misuse. The nonprofit’s board members posted on Facebook, revealing they had contacted authorities about financial improprieties.

NonStop Local confirmed a police report was filed recently, though the details of the complaint remain undisclosed. Rick Clark, the executive director of Giving Back Spokane, addressed the situation on social media.

Clark expressed confusion in his Facebook post, stating, “All of this is completely out of the blue… and he’s as confused as anyone else.”

The public became aware of the situation through a Facebook post shared by the board of directors. The board described the post as a “heartbreaking but necessary letter” and mentioned discovering evidence of financial impropriety as they were shutting down the nonprofit. They immediately took action by contacting lawyers and filing a police report.

The board did not specify who was allegedly involved in the misuse of funds. Multiple board members declined to comment further due to legal reasons.

Attempts to reach Clark by phone were unsuccessful. However, Clark’s Facebook post emphasized his lack of knowledge about the allegations, stating they “hit me like a ton of bricks.” He requested patience, saying, “Seeing things said online without me even knowing what I am being accused of doing is beyond concerning and a bit frustrating.”

Clark noted that Giving Back Spokane ceased operations last month after reaching a “natural closing point.” He mentioned that any leftover funds would be transferred to “Next Chapter,” a nonprofit that opened in April. The owners of Next Chapter confirmed this, noting the process involves the attorney general reviewing paperwork to ensure everything is in order before potentially receiving the funds. They have already received a van donated by Giving Back Spokane.

Spokane Police confirmed that an active investigation is underway. They stated that if wrongdoing is found, they will recommend criminal charges.
