OLYMPIA, Wash. – New data from the American Academy of Pediatrics shows a significant increase in nicotine ingestions among young children.
The study revealed 134,663 cases of nicotine ingestion among children younger than 6 years old reported to US poison centers. Most of these incidents involved children younger than 2 years old, and the study noted two fatalities.
The research highlighted that the production and evolution of liquid nicotine through vapes and nicotine pouches have made these products more accessible.
This information emerges as Washington State’s HB 2033 seeks to include nicotine products like Zyn nicotine pouches in the existing “other tobacco products” tax. This tax currently applies to various tobacco products.
Supporters of the bill argue that raising taxes on nicotine products is essential to reduce youth usage. Reporting from the Spokesman Review indicates that the purchasing audience for these products is predominantly young.
