WASHINGTON STATE — Several new laws took effect today, impacting family leave and the cannabis industry.

Senate House Bill 12-13 aims to make paid family and medical leave more accessible. The law allows workers to take shorter leave periods, reducing the requirement from eight hours to four hours in a row to qualify for paid leave. Additionally, employees who have worked with an employer for at least six months will have job protection while on paid family and medical leave.

Two new laws also affect the cannabis industry in Washington. Senate Bill 52-06 changes advertising restrictions, allowing businesses to display up to four ad signs and two trade name signs.

Senate Bill 54-03 targets the control of cannabis stores by preventing large companies or investors from acquiring too many licenses. It restricts individuals with a financial interest in the cannabis sector from holding interests in more than five licenses.
