OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington State Department of Commerce has introduced a groundbreaking tool to simplify zoning comparisons across the state.
The Washington State Zoning Atlas (WAZA) compiles local zoning data into standardized categories, providing a comprehensive statewide view, Commerce said in a release.
The WAZA, developed with MAKERS architecture and urban design, BHC Consultants, and students from Washington’s accredited planning programs, is available as an interactive web-based map and downloadable database.
This tool addresses the challenge of inconsistent zoning codes across cities and counties, making it easier to assess zoning impacts on housing and development.
“The Washington State Zoning Atlas is a powerful resource to answer big questions and help bring more housing online,” said Commerce Director Joe Nguyễn. “Zoning decisions shape what kinds of homes get built, where they’re built, and who can afford to live there. Local governments make the rules that decide what gets built where, but until now we didn’t have a clear picture of how those rules add up statewide.”
The WAZA aids in identifying barriers to housing and understanding new housing laws across the state. It also supports research by clarifying potential development areas and intensities.
A user guide and examples for research and policy analysis are available to assist users.
The project involved students from the University of Washington Tacoma, UW Seattle, Western Washington University, and Eastern Washington University. They participated in a joint course to learn about zoning and data collection for the WAZA, the release added.
